The chances of Governor Alex Otti securing a second term in 2027 are said to be entering an increasingly unpredictable phase, following deepening divisions within the Labour Party.
Concerns have been raised over the unresolved leadership crisis in the party, with observers noting that the situation could significantly impact the governor’s political future. Despite assurances from the state government that all is well, critics argue that recent developments suggest otherwise.
One such concern is the governor’s absence from the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration exercise, particularly within his faction. Analysts suggest this may be linked to uncertainties surrounding internal party structures and compliance with provisions of the amended Electoral Act.
The crisis escalated last week when the factional Caretaker Committee Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, was reportedly removed by over 60 members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) during a meeting she convened. Following the development, the party’s women leadership at both national and state levels endorsed her removal through a jointly signed communiqué.
The growing division has led to parallel electronic membership registration drives by the rival factions, raising concerns about the party’s preparedness ahead of the forthcoming primaries.
Sources indicate that Governor Otti may be reconsidering his political options amid the uncertainty. It is recalled that the All Progressives Congress had previously urged him to return to the party, where he was once a member before joining Labour Party ahead of the 2022 primaries.
