The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized a faction of the Labour Party in Umuehim Nvosi for what it described as personal attacks against Orji Uzor Kalu, urging the group to address pressing governance issues instead.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC said the faction failed to engage with substantive concerns raised by the former governor and current senator representing Abia North. The party argued that rather than offering factual rebuttals, the group resorted to “innuendos, name-calling, and personal attacks.”
The APC questioned the legitimacy of the faction, noting that it remains unrecognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission and therefore lacks legal standing unless determined otherwise by the courts.
According to the statement, Kalu had highlighted key issues affecting the state, including rising education costs, poor welfare conditions for lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions, and the neglect of teachers in primary and secondary schools.
The APC described these concerns as “widely acknowledged realities” that require urgent attention.
The party also backed Kalu’s claims regarding infrastructure, alleging that projects currently showcased by the administration of Alex Otti are largely rehabilitation of initiatives started by previous governments, including those executed during Kalu’s tenure between 1999 and 2007.
In addition, the APC expressed concern over what it termed the emergence of political violence in the state, warning that such developments were previously uncommon in Abia’s political environment.
The statement further described Kalu’s call for improved governance, prudent management of public resources, and better welfare for citizens as a “statesmanlike intervention” deserving of commendation.
The party urged the Labour Party faction to abandon personal attacks and instead focus on addressing the issues raised, emphasizing the need for responsible political engagement.
Reaffirming its political ambitions, the APC declared confidence in its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that it aims to win all senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats, as well as reclaim the Abia State Government House.
The party concluded by stressing that Abians deserve leadership grounded in accountability, transparency, and performance.
