The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has threatened to approach the court to restrain the lawmaker representing Obingwa West State Constituency, Hon Uchenna Erondu, from defecting to another political party.
The warning was issued during a mega empowerment programme and grand civic reception organised in honour of Hon Erondu in Obingwa yesterday.
Speaking at the event, the Abia State Chairman of the PDP, Elder Abraham Amah, described the lawmaker as a “strong pillar” of the party whose exit would not be tolerated.
According to Amah, the PDP had gathered at the event at the invitation of Hon Erondu, alongside party leaders, colleagues, friends and constituents, to celebrate his contributions and reaffirm his place within the party.
“Inasmuch as this is a PDP event, we have friends in other parties who are here. PDP is a big party with friends across other political parties.
“Many political leaders in Abia, including the present Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa and others, have their roots in PDP. Your future cannot be separated from your past, and your past is PDP. We are very proud of you Erondu”, he remarked.
In a dramatic remark that drew applause from party faithful, the PDP chairman claimed the party had secured a perpetual injunction restraining Hon Erondu from joining another party, stressing that the party would invoke legal action should he attempt to defect.
“We cannot allow you to leave because you are a strong force in this party”, Amah added.
However, the PDP’s stance was immediately countered by a governorship candidate in Imo State, Hon Uche Nwosu, who openly wooed Hon Erondu to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nwosu praised Erondu’s empowerment initiatives, describing them as synonymous with the APC’s philosophy of service to the people.
He further stated that the APC would not hesitate to challenge any court order restraining Erondu from leaving the PDP, insisting that the ruling party needs leaders with a proven record of grassroots impact.
