A chieftain of the Labour Party in Abia State, Elder James Chibuzor Chikwendu, has declared his intention to contest the Abia South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, vowing to unseat the incumbent lawmaker.
Speaking with journalists in Umuahia, Chikwendu described the continued representation of the district by one individual as unacceptable, stressing that the people deserve fresh leadership and broader representation.
“It is not healthy for one person to occupy that position for many years. There will be a strong challenger in 2027, and I am prepared to offer myself for that responsibility”, he said.
Chikwendu, who was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) in the 2011 elections, said his political journey has been guided by his commitment to activism and the protection of human rights. He also noted his role as the National Vice President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights in Nigeria.
According to him, his decision to align with the Labour Party stems from its ideological compatibility with activism and people-oriented governance.
“The Labour Party is the party that suits my activism in Nigeria”, he stated.
The LP chieftain further disclosed that he was among the foundation members involved in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015 but noted that the party did not meet his expectations at the time.
He, however, commended the current administration of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, urging supporters to continue backing the government for sustained peace and development in the state.
Chikwendu also praised the party’s interim leadership for successfully steering the affairs of the Labour Party through challenging times and organizing a credible national convention.
“The interim leadership did well despite all challenges. They were able to bring the party to its present level and organize a successful convention. The ward, local government, and state congresses were well conducted and commendable”, he added.
Reaffirming his ambition, Chikwendu said he would formally declare his candidacy for the Abia South Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing confidence in his ability to provide effective representation for the people of the district.
