The Politics of Selective Interpretation and the Danger of Judicial Distortion in the PDP

The attention of the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been drawn to a calculated campaign of distortion and grand deception being sponsored by certain disgruntled elements who have continued to promote a minority interpretation of the recent Supreme Court judgment relating to the internal affairs of the Party. Their obvious intention is to disparage and undermine the leadership of Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed as the substantive National Chairman of the PDP and Distinguished Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the duly recognized National Secretary of the Party.

What is currently being promoted in certain political circles is not a sincere interpretation of the law, but rather a desperate political narrative designed to manufacture confusion where none exists.

The truth remains that the Supreme Court judgment, when carefully and holistically examined, substantially upheld the earlier judgments of the Federal High Courts and the Court of Appeal which had questioned and dismissed the sanctity, legality, and constitutional foundation of the ill fated Ibadan convention. Those earlier judicial pronouncements remain valid, subsisting, and binding in law. No competent court has vacated or nullified them. Consequently, any structure, claim, or political arrangement arising from that convention remains fundamentally weakened by the weight of existing judicial decisions.

It is both legally dangerous and morally questionable for individuals to isolate portions of a judgment while deliberately suppressing the broader legal implications and consequential effect of the majority decision of the apex court. Such conduct amounts to intellectual dishonesty and political manipulation. More importantly, it is contemptuous to promote a minority judgment against the very substance and clear implications of the majority judgment of the Supreme Court on the same matter. Democracy survives on respect for judicial integrity, not on selective interpretation crafted to satisfy narrow political ambitions.

The law is never interpreted through propaganda, emotional excitement, media sensationalism, or orchestrated press conferences. The true position of the law emerges from the totality of judicial pronouncements, the consequential orders arising therefrom, and the constitutional effect of subsisting judgments. It is therefore misleading for any group of persons to create the false impression that the Supreme Court validated processes and outcomes that had earlier been substantially discredited by competent courts of law. Judicial decisions must be approached with responsibility, sincerity, and respect for institutional order.

What is even more unfortunate is the persistent attempt by certain political actors to destabilize the PDP at a time when Nigerians expect the Party to strengthen internal unity, consolidate its structures, and reposition itself as a credible democratic alternative. Instead of promoting reconciliation and institutional discipline, these elements have chosen the path of division, confusion, and political theatrics.

The PDP, however, remains larger than individual ambitions, factional interests, and temporary political frustrations.

For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP remains guided by constitutional order, due process, and the supremacy of lawful institutional is within the Party cannot emerge through media campaigns, selective legal interpretations, or political intimidation. Leadership derives from legitimacy, constitutional recognition, and established democratic processes. As matters stand today, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed remains the substantive National Chairman of the PDP, while Distinguished Senator Samuel Anyanwu continues to function as the recognized National Secretary of the Party. These are institutional realities which cannot be displaced by propaganda.

Abia PDP therefore urges all Party faithful, stakeholders, and members of the public to disregard the ongoing campaign of misinformation being circulated by merchants of instability and political confusion. The integrity of the judiciary must not be reduced to an instrument of factional warfare or personal political convenience. In every civilized democracy, the authority of the courts must be respected in substance, spirit, and entirety. Ultimately, truth does not fear completeness, and no amount of distortion can permanently prevail over judicial clarity and constitutional order.
