OUK, Nkwonta Will Face Sanctions If They Fail to Apologize — Abia APC Publicity Secretary
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has disclosed that the Senator representing Abia North District, Orji Uzor Kalu and the member representing Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency, Hon. Chris Nkwonta may face appropriate disciplinary sanctions, if they fail to apologize over comments allegedly made in support of Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 Governorship election.
Recall that the APC in Abia, had issued a 14 Day ultimatum to the two national lawmakers to apologize to the party for making statements, it described as unstatemanlike, irresponsible, embarrassing and inimical to the unity and electoral prospects of the party in the state.
Addressing journalists on Friday at the APC State Secretariat in Umuahia, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chief Uche Aguoru, said OUK and Nkwonta would likely face appropriate sanctions from the disciplinary committee, if they failed to tender their apologies within the stipulated period.
Aguoru said the party recently issued a communiqué addressing comments attributed to the two prominent members, which it considered inimical to the structure, unity and electoral interests of the APC in Abia State.
According to the party’s spokesperson, although the APC has its internal challenges, but it remains a major grassroots political organisation governed by established rules and regulations.
Aguoru stressed that it was unacceptable for its leaders to publicly make statements that could undermine the organisation or contradict its collective political position.
He particularly cited Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who reportedly stated during an interview with a national television station that Governor Alex Otti would win the 2027 governorship election.
The APC also referred to a statement allegedly made by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, member representing Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency, who reportedly declared, in the presence of the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during her visit to Abia, that he would vote for Governor Otti in the 2027 election.
The Publicity Secretary described such conduct as unacceptable, noting that its members and leaders are expected to abide by the constitution, rules and decisions of the party.
“They have reached out to us. A disciplinary committee has been set up and, in due course, the matter will be resolved”, he stated.
“The APC had been given 14 days for them to apologize. If after 14 days they don’t apologize, the disciplinary committee will commence appropriate sanctions on the erring leaders”.
He said the development is coming as a way to intensify efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures and position the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, maintaining that political differences within the organisation should be addressed through its established internal mechanisms rather than through public statements capable of weakening the party’s structure.
The Publicity Secretary further reiterated that no member, regardless of status or influence, was above the rules and regulations of the APC.
