NDC Disowns Apugo’s Directives on 2027 Voting Pattern, Warns Against Anti-Party Activities

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Abia State Chapter, has distanced itself from political directives allegedly issued by Hon. Ikechukwu Martin Apugo concerning the voting pattern of the people of Umuahia Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party, in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Rtn. Emeka Luis Okoro, said Apugo had no mandate to direct or determine how the people of the constituency should vote.

The statement followed a viral video interview with Ikwuano TV in which Apugo was alleged to have made pronouncements on the voting pattern of the electorate, including a directive that voting would not be based on political party affiliation, as well as comments concerning the governorship election.

The NDC described the development as an unauthorized political directive, stressing that Apugo was neither the party’s flag bearer for the constituency nor a recognized party administrator empowered to issue such directives.

According to the party, the people of Umuahia Federal Constituency have a constitutional right to freely choose their representatives without intimidation, coercion or personal directives from any individual.

The party further invoked Section 77(2) of the 1999 Constitution, saying the provision guarantees the right of Nigerians to freely elect their representatives.

The NDC also warned that actions capable of undermining party unity or amounting to anti-party activities would be taken seriously, noting that the relevant organs of the party would review Apugo’s actions in line with its constitution and take appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary.

The party, however, called on its members and supporters to remain calm and focused as it continues its harmonization and strategic planning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“No individual can speak for the collective will of the people,” the party stated.
