Hundreds Benefit as Chima Anyaso Foundation Partners NYSC for Free Medical Outreach in Abia
As governments and development partners across the world intensify efforts to achieve universal health coverage and reduce healthcare inequality, a major public private partnership in Abia State has brought free medical services to hundreds of residents in a rural community, reinforcing the growing role of philanthropy in expanding access to primary healthcare.
The Chima Anyaso Foundation, in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps through its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), on Thursday sponsored the 2026 Second Quarter Free Medical Outreach at Umuda Isingwu Community Hall in Umuahia North Local Government Area, where residents received comprehensive healthcare services at no cost.
Flagging off the outreach, the Abia State Coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, described the intervention as a practical demonstration of the Scheme’s enduring commitment to national development through community based healthcare, while commending the Chima Anyaso Foundation for supporting vulnerable rural populations with quality medical services.
Tanimu said the partnership reflected the growing importance of collaboration between public institutions and private organisations in addressing healthcare challenges, noting that the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers has remained one of the Scheme’s flagship community development programmes aimed at taking essential medical services to underserved communities.
He expressed appreciation to the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General O. O. Nafiu, the management of the Scheme, healthcare professionals, community leaders and residents for their support towards the successful implementation of the programme.
The NYSC Coordinator also acknowledged the presence of the Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Hon. Smart Iheoma, whose participation, he said, underscored the commitment of local authorities to improving the welfare of rural communities.
According to him, the outreach deployed corps medical personnel, including doctors, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals, who provided free general medical consultations, health screening, dental care, eye examinations, immunisation, health education, counselling and referral services.
He urged residents, particularly women, children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups, to maximise the opportunity by accessing the free medical services, stressing that preventive healthcare remains critical to building healthier and more productive communities.
Tanimu further appealed to corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to continue supporting the initiative through donations of drugs, medical consumables and other resources that would enable the programme to reach more rural communities across Abia State.
The beneficiaries described the outreach as life changing, saying it had eased the burden of accessing quality healthcare amid rising medical costs.
Among them was Elder Mrs Joy Nkemakolam, an 83 year old beneficiary, who praised the Chima Anyaso Foundation and the NYSC for bringing what she described as one of the largest free medical outreaches ever witnessed in the community.
She said many elderly residents who could not afford medical treatment had received quality healthcare without paying any fees, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
Other beneficiaries also commended the organisers, noting that the outreach had restored hope to many families and demonstrated how strategic partnerships between government institutions and private foundations could strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery while advancing community wellbeing.
