ADC Re-elects Don Norman Obinna as Abia Chairman, Vows to Capture Govt House in 2027
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), n Abia State has re-elected Don Norman Obinna as its State Chairman for the next four years, following the successful conduct of the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses.
Speaking after emerging unopposed at the State Congress, held in Umuahia, Norman vowed to lead the party to victory in the 2027 governorship election, declaring that the ADC was determined to take over the Government House in Abia State.
“I promise to double my effort to ensure that our collective objective, which is to take over Abia Government House, comes to pass,” he said while addressing journalists after the exercise.
According to him, the congresses were conducted in line with a judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which affirmed that state chairmen of the party are constitutionally empowered to conduct state congresses.
Obinna explained that the congresses held across Abia State followed successful ward and local government congresses conducted in all the 184 wards and 17 local government areas of the state.
“What happened here today is not peculiar to Abia alone. It cuts across the federation. What we did here mainly was affirmation of the old structure of ADC, including the new members who joined us and have shown capacity,” he stated.
The ADC chairman dismissed reports of factionalization within the party, insisting that those previously laying claim to leadership positions had exited the party.
“We do not have any faction in ADC. The people that constituted nuisance have left the party. There was never a time we saw them as members of the ADC”, he said.
Norman alleged that some former members, including individuals he identified as Mazi Kanu and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, had moved to other political platforms.
Commenting on recent political realignments, he maintained that the ADC was not built around any individual.
“ADC is not built around Peter Obi. We will go into the election because ADC is a big political party, and at the end our objective will be realised,” he added.
The party also described the court action involving some national leaders as a constitutional interpretation matter rather than a leadership crisis.
He said the case between the chairmen and David Mark was not a leadership tussle, which made chairmen of the party to seek redress in court, demanding the court to help interpret the ADC constitution.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Chiamaka Ohaja, the party said the congresses were peaceful, transparent, and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission in compliance with the Electoral Act and the ADC constitution.
The statement added that the successful congresses had laid the foundation for a stronger and more united ADC in Abia State ahead of future elections.
