Abia APC Moves Against Orji Kalu, Nkwonta Over Alleged Anti-Party Conduct, Demands Apology Within Seven Days
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has condemned statements attributed to former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Hon. Chris Nkwonta in support of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 Governorship election.
The State Working Committee (SWC) of the party, at a meeting held on Monday, August 10, 2026, described the alleged statements and actions of the two APC leaders as “unstatesmanlike, irresponsible, embarrassing and inimical” to the unity and electoral prospects of the party in the state.
In a communiqué signed by the 17 members of the SWC and made available to newsmen, the party expressed concern that the alleged declarations came at a time when the APC was mobilising its members across the 184 wards of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The SWC alleged that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, during an interview with a national television station, declared that Governor Otti would win the 2027 Governorship election.
It also expressed disappointment over Hon. Chris Nkwonta’s reported statement, made in the presence of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, that he would vote for Governor Otti in the 2027 election.
According to the Abia APC leadership, such statements by prominent members of the party amounted to “internal sabotage and anti-party conduct” capable of weakening the party’s electoral machinery and demoralising its members and supporters.
The SWC further stated that no individual, irrespective of political status, influence or past contributions to the party, was above the APC Constitution, rules and regulations.
It therefore cited Article 21.2 (11) of the APC Constitution, 2022, as the basis for its position that conduct inimical to the party or amounting to indiscipline and disloyalty could attract disciplinary action.
The party consequently gave Senator Kalu and Hon. Nkwonta seven days to tender what it described as an “unreserved public apology” to the APC, its leadership, members and supporters in Abia State.
The SWC said the apology must demonstrate their commitment to the party, its constitution, leadership and the collective decision of the APC to support its candidates in the 2027 general elections, particularly its Governorship candidate.
The party warned that failure to comply with the demand within the stipulated seven-day period would result in the constitution of a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding their statements and actions and make appropriate recommendations to the competent organs of the party.
It further resolved that, if found liable, the affected individuals could face disciplinary measures prescribed by the APC Constitution and other applicable regulations.
The SWC also warned that the party could withdraw its political support and privileges from either individual if their conduct was established to be inimical to the APC’s interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reaffirming its commitment to the 2027 elections, the Abia APC said it would continue to strengthen its structures, support its candidates and work towards winning the governorship and all legislative seats in the state.
The party urged its members to remain calm, focused and united, stressing that the APC was bigger than any individual regardless of political stature.
