The African Democratic Congress (ADC), candidate for Abia North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Ike Bishop Okoronkwo, has unveiled a four-point legislative agenda focused on education, economic prosperity, agriculture and women’s inclusion, as well as infrastructure development.

Okoronkwo, popularly known as IBO, also pledged to dedicate 80 per cent of his eligible personal earnings from the Senate to youth empowerment and enterprise development if elected.

He made the pledge on Monday at the unveiling of his campaign organization, campaign council and legislative agenda at the ADC Secretariat in Umuahia, Abia State.

Speaking under the theme, “O Zula Zukwanu Ike! Enough Is Enough — Let’s Take Back Abia North”, the senatorial candidate said his ambition was to provide representation that prioritizes measurable development, economic opportunities and improved living standards for constituents.

He said his proposed agenda was designed to address the challenges confronting the five Local Government Areas in Abia North Senatorial District through legislative advocacy, strategic partnerships, budgetary interventions and accountability.

According to him, representation should be measured by the lives improved, opportunities created and development delivered rather than political titles or years spent in office.

“I am not seeking election into the Senate simply because I believe it is my turn. I am seeking the mandate because I believe we can do better”,  he said.

Under the education component, tagged IBO Future Builders, Okoronkwo promised to advocate scholarships, technical and vocational education, digital skills acquisition and apprenticeship opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

He said he would pursue partnerships with federal agencies, educational institutions and development organizations to strengthen skills acquisition and expand opportunities for young people to secure employment or establish businesses.

On economic prosperity, the ADC candidate unveiled Abia North Arise, an initiative designed to support entrepreneurs, artisans, traders, graduates and small businesses through grants, business training, mentoring, equipment support and improved access to markets.

He said his proposed 80 per cent contribution from eligible personal Senate earnings would support the empowerment initiative under a transparent accountability framework.

Okoronkwo also set a four-year target of supporting 5,000 people to establish or develop enterprises and mobilizing 10,000 job and livelihood opportunities across the district.

He stressed that the initiative would focus on sustainable economic empowerment rather than financial handouts during election periods.

“I want to help build a generation of independent entrepreneurs rather than a population that depends permanently on politicians”, he said.

On agriculture, Okoronkwo said Abia North had considerable agricultural potential but required improved access to finance, modern farming techniques, processing facilities, storage, transportation and reliable markets.

He pledged to pursue legislative and budgetary interventions to support farmers, agricultural cooperatives and women-led businesses.

The candidate also disclosed that his team had begun discussions with prospective development partners to explore opportunities for agricultural investment, enterprise development and women’s economic empowerment.

He listed Norfund, FMO, Proparco, DEG, the United States International Development Finance Corporation, TechnoServe, AGRA and the Gates Foundation among the organizations with which his team hoped to explore potential opportunities.

He said the proposed initiative aimed to mobilize at least $5 million in eligible agricultural and enterprise investment across the district.

However, he clarified that the discussions were ongoing and that any funding would depend on project viability, due diligence and the approval of the relevant development partners.

According to him, the proposed agricultural programme would connect farmers, cooperatives and women-led businesses to finance, improved inputs, processing facilities and markets, while encouraging commercial farming and value-added processing.

On infrastructure, the ADC candidate promised to advocate the rehabilitation of priority roads and improved electricity access across Abia North.

He specifically mentioned communities and areas in Ohafia, Abam, Isuikwuato and Acha as requiring attention, adding that improved road networks would strengthen commercial activities and connect farmers to markets.

Okoronkwo also pledged to engage relevant federal and state authorities and lobby for budgetary allocations for infrastructure projects.

On electricity, Okoronkwo said he would advocate grid extensions, mini-grids and appropriate renewable-energy solutions through relevant agencies and institutions.

He identified rural communities, markets, schools, health facilities and agro-processing centres as potential beneficiaries of improved electricity access, acknowledging that senators do not directly execute every road or electricity project but argued that they could influence development through legislation, appropriation, advocacy and oversight.

The ADC candidate also expressed concern over poverty, youth unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure and the challenges confronting rural communities in the senatorial district.

He referenced the 2022 National Bureau of Statistics Multidimensional Poverty Index, which he cited as estimating that approximately 28.8 per cent of Abia North’s population experienced multidimensional poverty. He argued that the situation underscored the need for a development approach that prioritizes economic opportunities, education, agricultural investment and infrastructure.

The ADC candidate also raised concerns about erosion, poor road conditions and the quality of educational facilities in some communities, including parts of Umunneochi, questioning the impact of successive political administrations on the district’s development and called for greater scrutiny of claims concerning projects attributed to political office holders.

While acknowledging the office of the incumbent senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, he said public office holders should be subjected to scrutiny based on their records and contributions to development.

Okoronkwo maintained that his campaign would focus on policy alternatives rather than personal attacks, insisting that Abia North needed representation that prioritized measurable outcomes.

He promised to pursue bills that would advance the district’s interests, advocate federal projects, scrutinise public expenditure and publish progress reports on his proposed development initiatives.

At the event, Okoronkwo unveiled members of his campaign council, describing them as individuals who would work towards communicating his legislative agenda and mobilising support across the district.

Ugochukwu Uwaeke was named Director-General of the campaign council, while retired Major Kalu Agwu was appointed Deputy Director-General.

Addressing the campaign council members, Okoronkwo urged them to work collectively, engage stakeholders and communicate the campaign’s policy priorities to the electorate.

He said his proposed representation would be built around education, economic prosperity, agricultural development, women’s inclusion and infrastructure.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the campaign council, Ugochukwu Uwaeke, thanked Okoronkwo for entrusting him and other members with the responsibility of coordinating the campaign.

He pledged to work with the team towards achieving the objectives of the campaign and advancing the candidate’s legislative agenda, adding that the campaign council would work tirelessly to ensure victory is achieved.

Ike Bishop Okoronkwo subsequently called on youths, women, professionals, traders, farmers, community leaders and other stakeholders across Abia North to participate in the political process and engage with his proposed development agenda.

He reiterated his commitment to pursuing legislation, lobbying for projects and funding, building development partnerships and holding relevant agencies accountable for delivering results.

The candidate concluded by urging the people of Abia North to embrace what he described as the politics of performance, opportunity and sustainable prosperity.
