Security Threat: S’East IPAC Calls For Urgent Action,Condemns Killing Of Security Personnel In Abia
The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), in the Southeast region, has spoken out about the worsening security situation in the area.
Expressing deep concern in an interview with our reporter, the IPAC Chairman,Hon Prince Emeka Okafor, emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing insecurity, which he said has led to a heightened sense of fear and uncertainty among residents.
The IPAC chairman’s reaction comes amid reports of escalating violence and crime in the region, including armed attacks, kidnappings, killing of security agents, among others.
Okafor called for immediate and collaborative measures to address the deteriorating situation, which he described as a threat to lives, economic development and democratic stability.
He emphasized that the collaboration between security agencies, government officials and community leaders to restore peace and stability in the Southeast, has become pertinent, giving how the area has been entrapped on the scorching effects of insecurity that is currently disrupting daily life and discouraging investment in the region.
“Security is the bedrock of development. The current spate of insecurity in the South East, from armed attacks to rising criminal activities, is deeply worrisome. It is not only endangering lives but also undermining the social and economic fabric of our communities,” he said.
The Chairman called on security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and urged political parties, traditional rulers, and community leaders to play active roles in fostering unity and addressing root causes of the unrest. He also highlighted the need for government at all levels to prioritize youth empowerment as a strategy to reduce restiveness.
“As stakeholders in the region, we must rise above partisan politics and join forces to ensure a safe and prosperous South East. This is not just a security issue, it’s about the future of our people,” the IPAC boss added.
He further appealed for calm and cooperation with security agencies, urging the public to report suspicious activities and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
“The South East has faced persistent security challenges in recent years, including clashes between security forces and separatist groups, as well as incidents of violent crime. I think, the region can come out of this menace,if their son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,that is being incarcerated,is released.
“The Federal government should as a matter of urgency, free Nnamdi Kanu, If the South East must be peaceful again”,he said.
The IPAC chairman, attributed the rising security threat in the region to the continuous detention of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), adding that once he regains his freedom, the area would bounce back to peace.
However, the South East IPAC chairman, reiterated the council’s commitment to advocating for peace and security, saying, “We will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the South East remains a place where everyone can live and thrive in peace.”
Recall, that the Inter-Party Advisory Council, serves as a platform for political parties to engage on critical national issues, promoting unity and democratic ideals. The South East region, known for its rich culture and entrepreneurial spirit, has been grappling with significant security issues that demand urgent attention.
