Chukwu Lauds Governor Otti’s Commitment To Improve Power Supply In Abia
The Senior Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti and Head of the Procurement Bureau, Dr Oluebube Chukwu,has commended the governor’s dedication to ensuring a stable electricity supply in Abia State. Chukwu described Otti’s efforts as a game-changer for industrialization and economic growth in the state.
Speaking in his office after Governor Otti’s recent meeting with a delegation from the European Union at the Aba Integrated Power Project (Geometric), Chukwu emphasized the importance of the initiative. He noted that the administration’s strategic push to enhance power generation and distribution would provide businesses and households with reliable electricity, thereby fostering economic development.
Governor Otti, during his visit to the Aba Integrated Power Project, reiterated his commitment to industrialization through a steady power supply. He commended the progress made by the company, particularly in the establishment of substations in parts of Aba, despite existing challenges. He also assured that his government is making strategic moves to invest in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to address supply gaps in areas not covered by Aba Power’s ring-fenced network.
The governor expressed optimism that the state’s collaboration with Aba Power would lead to surplus electricity generation, which could be extended to Umuahia once necessary acquisitions are completed. He stressed that his administration is prioritizing power supply because of its vital role in revitalizing industries and creating employment opportunities in the state.
Dr. Chukwu highlighted the governor’s bold steps in negotiating key energy deals, including discussions with Professor Barth Nnaji on selling excess power to Umuahia. He praised Otti’s ability to engage stakeholders at the highest levels, which has led to significant progress in addressing the state’s energy challenges.
Referencing the defunct Star Paper Mill in Aba, the governor noted that his administration has intensified efforts to revive abandoned industries. He disclosed that talks with the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) are ongoing and expressed optimism about a breakthrough soon.
During the visit, the European Union delegation, led by Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation, acknowledged the progress made in power generation. De Luca stated that the EU is keen on exploring areas of partnership that will further enhance energy supply in Abia State.
Barrister Ugo Opiegbe, Managing Director of Aba Integrated Power Project, also lauded Governor Otti’s unwavering support. He recalled how the administration played a key role in resolving gas supply challenges by facilitating a crucial meeting with the Vice President and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Opiegbe emphasized that the governor’s proactive approach has been instrumental in stabilizing power generation in Aba. He further stated that the partnership between the state government and Aba Power has created an enabling environment for economic growth and industrial resurgence.
The EU delegation is expected to continue its engagements with Governor Otti, with plans to visit a cocoa plantation in Bende Local Government Area as part of their working tour in Abia State.
