A chieftain of the Labour Party in Abia State, Chief Chimeremeze Odoemenam, popularly known as Onwa Bende, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal misconduct and leadership challenges within his former party.
Speaking with journalists in Bende Local Government Area, Chief Odoemenam said his decision to leave the Labour Party was driven by what he described as persistent issues involving the local government executives and the overall leadership structure of the party.
According to him, the environment within the APC presents a more progressive and rewarding platform for political engagement and grassroots development.
“I have found a better footing in the APC. Having observed the performance of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, I can confidently say that his contributions to the development of Bende are unmatched. In the history of this local government, no representative has delivered as much as he has”.
Chief Odoemenam added that his decision was also influenced by a desire to align with what he described as a forward-moving political structure in the area.
“I have chosen to identify with a party that is making visible progress. APC is moving forward in Bende, and I am proud to be part of that journey”, he stated.
The former Labour Party stalwart further pledged his commitment to the APC, noting that he would actively support the party both financially and politically.
Onwa Bende pledged to contribute to the growth of the APC, pointing that his team and foundation would fully support the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, as well as, Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, in their various political aspirations.
While hinting at his own political ambitions, Chief Odoemenam noted that he is not yet led to make a formal declaration for the 2027 elections.
“I have political aspirations, but for now, I am focused on supporting the party and its candidates”, he added.
